Les Misérables tells the story of Jean Valjean, a prisoner whose violation of rules after being paroled leads police inspector Javert to pursue him. Valjean tries to help Fantine, a poor working woman, and rescue her daughter, Cosette, from the innkeeper and his wife, who are holding her captive as a slave. Marius, a veteran of post-war revolutionary France, falls in love with Cosette, but when the war becomes more brutal, their fates are turned upside down.
