"Going Up

创作阐述

My mother was a fisherman's daughter who dropped out of school early because of my grandfather's preference for sons. Although she was extremely hardworking and intelligent, she suffered a lot. I often thought that if she had continued her education like my brother-in-law, she might have become a very great person, but unfortunately fate did not give her the chance. It is heartbreaking to realize that 40 years later, there are still countless girls who, simply because of their gender, are judged by their surroundings to be "not good enough" and are denied the right to choose their destiny. Many adult women also face injustices in their social lives. Xidongting Lake, where my mom was born, is a habitat for egrets, and when the egrets are flying beautifully and freely, fishermen take fishing eagles down there to catch fish. Many people don't know that fishing eagles can actually fly, but because of the long period of domestication, they have been tamed into the habit of not being able to fly, and once in a while one or two awakened ones would try to run away, and they would be knocked into the water with a shot. The fishermen would tie the necks of the fishing eagles with straw ropes, and they would catch fish themselves but not be able to swallow them, and the fishermen would choke them to squeeze the fish out. All they could do was watch the egrets fly and live out their lives with their throats strangled. Like the thousands of trapped women who can fly, but can't make it to the long sky. I modeled my heroine, the little girl Xizhou, after my mother. All the women in the movie are mirror images of each other. The story of Wang Chao and Xi Zhou is a story of male understanding of women, and even more so, a story of thousands of women fighting against the predicament of fate. I also have a small selfishness buried in the film - my mom fought life as hard as she could so that I could have the opportunity to chase my dreams. If I can meet up with my teenage mom now, I hope I can guard her dreams as well.

故事大纲

Growing up in the city, Wang Chiu grew up with no worries about food and clothing, but his family was not harmonious. When his mother left the country to pursue a career, he didn't understand why she left, but under the influence of his basketball-loving father, he set up the ideal of becoming a professional basketball player. After his father's death, the gap between him and his mother deepened, and his dream of playing basketball became his only spiritual support and a way to declare war on his mother. He tried his best to pursue his dream, but due to injury and illness, his basketball dream was shattered. Disillusioned and not knowing what to do with his life, he hides out and teaches in the fishing village where his father used to teach, so that he can let himself go. Wang Chiu is supposed to teach boys' basketball, but he meets a little girl, Zhao Xizhou, who is pestering him to play basketball. Xizhou is tigerish and wild, with none of the shyness of a normal little girl. She loves basketball, but has no opportunity to play. Her tenacity impresses Wang Chao, who makes her a substitute, but he doesn't realize that Xizhou is so gifted that she is amazing in one game after another. Wang Chao saw his former self in Xizhou, and he longed to help Xizhou realize her basketball dream, hoping that she could go to a bigger world in the future. But the road is not that simple. The patriarchal environment of the fishing village and Xizhou's family problems make Wangchao realize that even though Xizhou is already such an outstanding little girl, she still has no possibility of breaking out of this land. In the process of protecting Xi Zhou, Wang Chao grows up. His belief that "Xizhou must break out" also makes him understand why his mother ran away. In the end, Wang Chiu helps Xizhou realize his dream of playing basketball and breaks out of the fishing village. He himself has come out of the shadows to face life positively again.
