In the Hexi Corridor at the end of the Qing Dynasty, the old inspector Ren Pingsheng, who is about to retire, and his son Ren Yuan, who is taking over. When a shipment of scriptures destined for the capital is stolen, the son pursues them and the father blocks them. The blacksmith store girl who is hurt by the land, the maker who defends the village's water supply, and the official who is desperate to build a factory to save the country, all go through bumps and bruises along the way, and the scrolls change hands again and again. When the pursuit of the scrolls leads to a battle for the water supply of two villages upstream and downstream, the whereabouts of the scrolls emerge, and the father and son each draw their own swords in search of the answer to the question, "How should a person spend his life?
