I was born and grew up in Xinjiang as a child, and at the age of eighteen I left Xinjiang for the first time to travel on my own. Years of living in a foreign land have made me start to rethink the relationship between myself and my hometown. My childhood playmates, my father's house, and old songs often haunt me in my dreams, and I began to try to use my camera to write about the nostalgia and plight of my generation.
In the dead of winter, Ivan, a young ethnic Russian, returns to his hometown of Tashkent after many years away from home. Faced with his family's complaints and questions, he goes to the town as if to escape. In an old-fashioned hotel in the town, he meets the Tatar owner, Zhefati, and the tenant, Xiaoyu, by accident. The family has been torn apart by an earlier accident, and he has been in deep pain for many years. Xiaoyu finds out that her father used to work as a night watchman at the town's lake two years ago, and she moves to the town to take a short-term job at the local tavern. The three are boarded up in an inn in the middle of a snowstorm and all seem to be looking for a way out. Where should Ivan go from here?
