The Water and the Moon in Your Hand records the legendary life of Ye Jiaying (1924- ), a master of classical Chinese poetry. After a lifetime of war, political persecution, and overseas wanderings, she returned to the reform and opening-up of China in her later years, continuing to create and teach, and restoring the lifeblood of classical Chinese poetry that had been interrupted by the Cultural Revolution. The film intertwines Ye Jiaying's personal life with a thousand years of classical Chinese poetry, showing the trajectory of her search for the meaning of her existence in the river of poetry. The film is a metaphor for the tumultuous years that Mr. Ye experienced, and invites musician Toshiaki Sato to create a film score based on the eight poems of , combining elegant and modern music to bring new life to Du Fu's poetry.
