Film Introduction

On the night of January 29, 1990, shortly before the beginning of Chile's democratic transition, 49 political prisoners persecuted by the dictatorship escaped from a prison in Santiago through an escape tunnel. The 80-meter-long tunnel was dug by 24 men over a period of 18 months using rudimentary tools such as spoons, forks and screwdrivers, and the 55 tons of earth generated by the digging of the tunnel were hidden in the prison. Neither the ordinary inmates in nearby cells nor the prison guards who watched them every day detected their actions. It was one of the most surprising and spectacular prison breaks in Chilean history.
