Sarah Obeng, a doctoral student at Columbia University, had been the "other kid" to her relatives and elders for years, and although her Ghanaian immigrant heritage made her seem a bit of an anomaly on the white campus, her excellent grades had always made her academically unbeatable. She makes a rebellious decision-quitting her degree in molecular neuro-oncology to travel to Ohio with her boyfriend to start a new life. However, the sudden death of Sarah's mother disrupts all of her planning; she is suddenly given the family home and bookstore as an inheritance, and must also organize her mother's funeral according to Ghanaian tradition. Caught off guard by the responsibility and uncertainty, where does she go from here?
